JPL Stories

WEDNESDAY
July 22,
2009
4:30-5:30

The next JPL Story is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2009 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. with Dr. James Fanson, Astronomy and Physics Directorate, presenting, "Rescuing Hubble.” pdf

In 1990 the Hubble Space Telescope was placed in Earth orbit. Decades in the making, Hubble was intended to provide the greatest leap forward in our view of the heavens since Galileo peered through his telescope 400 years ago. When it was discovered that Hubble’s optics were flawed and the telescope could not be focused, JPL found itself center stage in a drama to rescue the mission from technical disaster and public ridicule. Hear a personal account of this adventure from someone unexpectedly drafted into the cast of players.
