How Do I?

How do I connect to BEACON from home?

Before you begin, you will need to set up your remote access account, and will need to use your JPL username and password. If you do not know it, then go to [http://eis.jpl.nasa.gov/fil/eis_userlist.html] and click on "Get JPL Username and Password." Select the BrowserRAS method of remote access. Please note that VPN does not work with licensed electronic resources. Click here for more information.

  • Electronic Journals and Databases: The Remote JPLNetwork BrowserRAS Access method enables you to access resources licensed to JPL and validated by IP Network Domain. You can also use the dial-up access, but it is vey slow.
  • Catalogs: You can use the BEACON Catalogs from home through your local Internet Service Provider(ISP) or Remote JPLNetwork Access. The catalogs can be viewed using all RAS methods. You cannot link from the catalog record to any licensed electronic resource without using BrowserRAS or dial-up. VPN does not work.

How do I order a book, document, subscription, paper or other library material? [JPL Only]

Use BEACON Express to order books for loan or purchase; to request photocopies of articles and papers; to request interlibrary loans; or to order documents. Before you begin, you will need to set up your profile, using your JPL username and password. If you do not know it, then go to [http://eis.jpl.nasa.gov/fil/eis_userlist.html] and click on "Get JPL Username and Password."

How do I borrow materials?

The JPL Archives does not loan its materials, although copies can be requested. To arrange a visit to the Archives or for further questions contact the JPL Archives at (818)354-1844.

The JPL Library loans books, documents, and some audiovisual materials to any JPL employee, onsite contractor, or resident NASA employee. Contact Library Reference at x4-4200.

How do I access electronic materials?

The full-text electronic resources of the JPL Library and the JPL Archives are accessible via BEACON. Most library resources are available only from the JPL Network Domain. Many of the JPL Archives electronic collections are available both to JPL employees and the general public.

To access site-licensed electronic resources from off-Lab, please see the section above, How do I connect to BEACON from home?

How do I transfer inactive records to storage?

For instructions, see "Hard Copy Records Storage and Retrieval" (Doc ID 65913) procedure in JPL Rules and use JPL Form 1496-S, the Records Storage Request form.
