Explorer 1 Launch
45th Anniversary

On January 31, JPL will commemorate the 45th anniversary
of the launch of Explorer 1, the first American earth-orbiting satellite.
In this photograph, technicians lowered the Explorer 1 satellite
payload onto the launch vehicle's fourth stage motor. The photo
was taken in the gantry at Launch Complex 26, Patrick Air Force
Base, Florida, on January 20, 1958.
The January
1998 Historical Photo of the Month featured a mockup of Explorer
1 and the fourth stage motor, surrounded by several JPL engineers.
