Fire Trucks
Photograph Number M-3999

In November 1963, JPL's fire department acquired two new trucks. Fire Chief Bob Helsel and Security Chief Bill Hansen stand in front of the new trucks, with members of the fire crew in the vehicles.

From the mid 1940s through the present, the Laboratory has had an on-site fire department, security force, and medical staff. With a current workforce of about 5,000 JPL functions like a small self-contained city, providing various safety and emergency services for its people and facilities, and protecting the valuable spacecraft hardware designed and assembled here.

Archival Sources: Lab-Oratory, various articles; JPL Telephone Directories; History Collection document number 3-797. For information about the history of JPL, contact the JPL Archives.
