Historical Photo of the Month - December 2005

JPL Decal

JPL Decal
Photograph Number P-1158

In 1953, the JPL Employee Recreation Club held a contest for the design of a JPL decal. The winner was Walter Michalsky, technical illustrator for the Wind Tunnel. His original black and white artwork (Photo Number M-1557) was used to create the decal above. JPL employees could purchase it for 15 cents, or 2 for a quarter. (Lab-Oratory, March 1953, p. 1)

This design was never the official logo of JPL, but was used informally for many years. A large sign made from this design can still be seen on the west side of building 148.
