VIP Visitors, Voyager I at Jupiter
Photograph Number P-21268Bc
On March 5 JPL celebrates the 25th anniversary of Voyager I's closest approach to Jupiter. The activities related to the encounter included several days of press conferences, VIP visits, and special events. The photo above, taken on March 7, 1979 shows from left to right, Caltech President Dr. Marvin Goldberger, actor Sidney Poitier, an unidentified guest, and JPL Director Dr. Bruce Murray standing by a full size model of Voyager. Others participating in the festivities included former JPL Director Dr. William Pickering, California Governor Jerry Brown, Dr. Carl Sagan, author Ray Bradbury, and New York Times science writer Walter Sullivan. Media correspondents included Jules Bergman and Hugh Downs.
This encounter provided many surprises to scientists, such as close up views of a massive storm known as the Great Red Spot, a ring of debris around Jupiter, and volcanoes on the moon Io.
For more information about Voyager, see the online exhibit entitled Historical Images of Voyager's Grand Tour, the Voyager web site or fact sheet, or contact the JPL Archives.
