 1963 Tournament of Roses Parade
Several weeks after Mariner 2 successfully flew by Venus, Dr. Pickering served as the Grand Marshall of the 1963 Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California. He is shown here with his first wife, Muriel, who passed away in 1992. Mariner 2, the first spacecraft to observe another planet, was featured on a JPL float that year.
