Central Recording System
Photograph Number P-420
The Central Recording System (CRS) recorded information from 22 laboratories and rocket test cells throughout JPL. Pressure, thrust, fuel flows, and temperatures were measured by electrical gauges, and the signals were transmitted by a network of cables to the CRS. Information from several different tests and experiments could be collected simultaneously at the CRS, which eliminated the need for duplicate data recording facilities and staff. By housing the equipment in one location it allowed for better operation and maintenance.
The first Central Recording System was set up in 1947. In March 1948, the system was upgraded and enlarged, moving from the original Sheet Metal Shop to the Chemistry Building (83). In 1954 the facility doubled in size, when it was moved to the Electronics Building (125) as shown above, to accommodate additional test facilities and more complex testing. Doug MacGregor, Bart Graves, Gene Longbrake and Buzz Dorman are at the CRS controls.
