Advanced Google Searching: How to Improve your Search Results and Save your Time
“Google” is already a synonym for “search,” but are you satisfied with the results you find?
Do you usually just look at the first three results? If you don’t see what you are looking for, what do you do? Do you want to be more effective when you use Google? Are there tips for getting better results? If you are interested in any of these questions, this is the workshop for you.
The class will assume some familiarity with Google search, but will also cover a review of basic techniques. The focus will be on improving your search results, and ideas to save you time in finding hard to locate technical information.
At the end of the class, you will learn:
- Ways to improve the accuracy of your Google search results,
- How to find “hard to find” information,
- How to find the needle in a haystack,
- How to locate technical information,
- How to search for images.

Bibliometrics: Assessing the Impact of JPL Publications
by Robert A. Powers,
Senior Technical Librarian, JPL Library
Wednesday,
January 16,
2008
12:00 PM to 1 PM
Bldg 180-101
Bibliometrics is a type of research method used in library and information science to describe patterns of publication within a body of literature. JPL Authors Database (JAD) contains references to scientific and technical publications by JPL authors since 1990. Applying bibliometric methods to JAD data gives a perspective on JPL’s scientific output and research impact.
Robert Powers, Senior Technical Librarian with the JPL Library, has been analyzing JPL publication metrics for the last five years. At this presentation, he will describe the basic indicators that are currently produced by the JPL Library and discuss the benefits and difficulties of such studies. He will also discuss the opportunity to develop metrics that are more closely tied to specific JPL science and technology goals. Come to learn more about the metrics, and to share your thoughts on this topic. Nature Archives Online
Do you need quick access to an article from Nature magazine?
The JPL Library has purchased access to the Nature archives online. You can now retrieve issues back to 1869 from your
desktop at the Nature website.
Nature is just one of the many online journals provided by the JPL Library. A complete list of titles is available on the BEACON website.
Electronic Books on Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Nanotechnology

"Why Tell a JPL Story?"
by Teresa Bailey, Ph.D., Senior Technical Librarian, JPL
Wednesday, Oct 3, 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm, 167 conference room
The "JPL Stories" program is now in its 7th year. Stories offer an approach different from
the more formal lectures, seminars and town halls we have at JPL; they offer another way to be a
part of the JPL discussion. While the listeners have expressed a high level of praise and support
for the program, as the program progressed Teresa became more and more interested in the storytellers’
perspective -- and ultimately, this became the
focus of her doctoral dissertation, The Experience of the Storyteller:
Moving from Personal to Collective Knowledge Sharing.
Come learn what the "JPL Stories" storytellers revealed in this in-depth qualitative study.
The Information Science Seminar Series features the professional activities of the information sciences community at JPL.
For more information about the series, please contact Dudee Chiang at ext 4-8260.
Wednesday, Oct 3, 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm, 167 conference room
