Borrowing Books

Here are a few ways to borrow a book from the JPL Library:

Submit request through BEACON Express.
- Select Book Loan under the New Request section.
Search BEACON Catalog to locate online or print copy.
Locate in BEACON Information Commons stacks
Contact Library Circulation at x4-3840 to check out or recall an item.

How do I renew a book?

For JPL Library books: Online or call Circulation x4-3840.
For InterLibrary books ordered through Beacon Express: Call x4-3841.

FAQ:

Q: Who may borrow?
A: JPL employee, on-site contractor, intern, or resident NASA employee.Q: How long can I keep the item?
A: Items published after 2000: one month and eligible for 3 renewals.

Items published 2000 and prior: indefinite.These are due upon recall if needed by another user.

New books with a waiting list: three weeks. Users can place their names back on the waiting list. Q: Do books have to be checked out and returned in person?
A: No. They can be sent via interoffice mail to: Attn: Circ M/S 111-113. Q: Can I recall an item that is check out?
A: Yes. It will be recalled from the current borrower and checked out to you. Contact the Circulation desk at x4-3840 to place a recall. If the book cannot be retrieved within a reasonable period of time, we will borrow a copy via interlibrary loan.Q: Will I get an overdue notice if I forget to return or renew a book on time?
A: Yes. If there is no response after three notices, Library staff contacts the borrower’s manager to obtain a project/task number to replace the item.Q: Are there any overdue fines?
A: No. Borrowers are only charged for lost items.Q: Do I have to return an indefinite loan/Upon Recall item?
A: Only if someone else requests it. If the item is not returned after three notices, Library staff contacts the borrower’s manager to obtain a project/task number to replace the item.Q: What hours is the Library open?
A: Badged access to the Library is now offered 24/7. The Circulation Desk is staffed from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on non-Regular Day Off Fridays.

The Reference Desk is staffed from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Library, Archives, and Records Section is closed the JPL Regular Day Off Fridays.
