Named by the Romans for their god of sowing, astronomers in the 17th century first viewed Saturn with early telescopes. They saw it flanked by "companions". In 1655 the Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens, using a better telescope, could see the "companions" were a broad ring system extending around the planet.
