William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus

Cold Uranus, named for the mythic Greek father of the Titans, was unknown to ancient astronomers. For them, beyond Saturn lay only mysterious stars. However, on March 13, 1781, English astronomer William Herschel saw a "nebulous star" while using his powerful, self-made telescope. One hundred and sixty-five light minutes from Earth, Uranus was the first planet discovered with a telescope.
